Abstract:
Nursing is a science and practice discipline with a long history of education and service to the community.   Over the past twenty years academic nursing faculty practices have developed as a response to community need,  the need for more varied and rigorous student education, and professional practice and research opportunities for faculty.  These faculty practices not only benefit the students, community and faculty, but also provide an additional revenue stream for the university to contribute to its sustainability in challenging economic times.  Four practices will be discussed in relation to development, funding, student education, sustainability, faculty practice, scholarship and outcomes.

The first faculty practice model was developed in a critical care unit in an urban university hospital. This practice model  was developed for the integration of ACNP students in a critical care unit by ACNP faculty and Critical Care nursing administration.  ACNP faculty collaborate with the critical care staff on educational and research activities.

The second model highlights the development and integration of a Pain Management  practice in a Ryan White funded HIV clinic in an urban community hospital.  This faculty practice met an urgent need for patient care in this clinic and provides research and educational opportunities for graduate APN students, residents, fellows, and pharmacy students.

The third practice model is the funding and development of a community clinic in an inner city social service agency.  Patients are predominantly underserved, uninsured and with little access to healthcare.  Inter-professional graduate and undergraduate students and faculty collaborate and provide a team based model of care focused on improving patient outcomes and quality of care.

The fourth faculty practice model is a mobile healthcare van that brings vital primary care services to medically underserved children and youth in an urban inner city.  Students and faculty from varied biomedical health sciences disciplines in the university participate in the various health initiatives.  APN faculty staff the van and provide routine primary care on the van and in three community based healthcare programs in public housing developments in this urban community.
