Abstract:
“Dusonburgh” is a virtual community that was created to provide undergraduate and graduate students with learning experiences that may not be available in a consistent manner in actual experience. It consists of a virtual urban area surrounded by farmland and about one hour away from a large metropolitan area. This presentation will introduce several of the virtual families who reside in “Dusonburgh,” and with this introduction as the backdrop, will demonstrate how “Dusonburgh” can be utilized to teach competencies from the Essential Genetic and Genomic Competencies for Nurses with Graduate Degrees (ANA, 2011). The focus will be on the Professional Practice Competencies including: Risk Assessment and Interpretation; Genetic Education, Counseling, Testing and Results Interpretation; and Clinical Management.

“Dusonburgh” provides the faculty and student with a virtual community in which to bridge and infuse nurse practitioner core competencies. By developing the inhabitants, circumstances, and environment of this virtual community, the student is given the opportunity to collect evidence, analyze data, integrate knowledge, and develop new practice approaches in a consistent manner throughout the curriculum and with a consistent measurement of outcome objectives.
