Abstract:
Attendees will be provided with examples of the educational steps/model to integrate student-driven translational research projects into clinical practicum courses.

This poster will describe:

  • Use of the Translational Research Integrative Process (TRIP) model.
  • The application of knowledge and skills gained in research courses  and utlilized in  practicum courses.
  • The students' contributions to improve care in the clinical practicum setting.
  • The student's contribution to healthcare provider's knowledge of and access to current standards of care.

For the translational research project, each student applies use of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) electronic Preventive Services Selector (ePSS) tool in the primary care setting. Prior to implementation, the student completes a review of ten charts for the presence of AHRQ recommendations for cardiac screening to evaluate present practice. The student uses the ePSS application with ten patients seen in the clinical setting to determine AHRQ category A cardiac recommendations. The student compares present practice (pre-implementation) with post-implementation outcomes and makes recommendations to healthcare providers for practice change to improve patient outcomes.

The poster will also describe barriers and facilitators for practice change.
