Abstract:
From the Clinic to the Classroom: Nurse Practitioner to Nurse Practitioner Educator

Many NPs enter the classroom as experts in clinical practice but with little, sometimes no, preparation in the art and practice of teaching. Thus, they may experience stress and encounter difficulties as they design and present content in a way that promotes learning, critical thinking, and analysis along with an ability of students to apply new knowledge in a new practice role.

This workshop will address three of the essential teaching competencies often lacking in the novice NP educator whether teaching face-to-face or on-line. These are the:

-       Use of case studies to develop student’s ability to effectively use data and improve diagnostic reasoning to develop evidence-based client/ family focused plans of care

-       Design of discussion questions for use in virtual and face-to-face discussion sessions to promote active learning

-       Creation of examinations which evaluate achievement of course objectives and practice competencies through items which require application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

After a presentation on each of the three topics, participants will work in small groups to develop learning or evaluation activities using one of the three techniques. Workshop faculty will assist the groups during this time. Outcomes will be presented as time allows. Individual participants will be invited to submit case study, discussion and test items to workshop faculty for feedback after the workshop ends.
