Abstract:
Interprofessional Education

The NP-led interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) provides each health professional and student the opportunity to practice IPCP through the delivery of primary, secondary and tertiary care to persons throughout the life span. The interprofessional team of healthcare providers emphasize health promotion and wellness, regardless of the person’s state of health, as well as focus on the prevention and management of chronic diseases, the most common and costly of all health problems that affect one out of every two individuals (CDC, 2009; IOM, 2012). This innovative primary care practice provides interprofessional clinical training opportunities for nursing and other healthcare professional students.  In this practice, nurses have an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in interprofessional team building, collaborative problem-solving as well as care management and coordination

A curriculum based on the four IPCP domains and the 38 competencies is being  developed for all clinical students from every health discipline who have clinical rotations at the NP led center. The curriculum and practice  emphasize the strengths of a practice environment that fosters increased communication and shared decision-making among practitioners, promotes mutual respect and effective dialogue among all members of the care team in care planning and problem solving and creates a more efficient and integrated practice  leading to high quality patient- and population-centered outcomes.  Learning modules are being developed that include roundtable discussions with the IPCP team members and faculty from the represented disciplines and case discussions.  The discussions are interactive and can be delivered in-person and online allowing for more student involvement.    Case discussions are recoreded will be archived utilizing a standardized metadata dictionary allowing students and faculty to search for specific information contained within a recording and categorized to assist students and faculty in filtering the list of recorded discussions by case topics.
