Abstract

Many of the nurse practitioner programs in the United States are having difficulty in finding clinical preceptors for the nurse practitioner students.  The preceptor shortage is due to multiple factors like increase enrollment of nurse practitioner students, lack of incentive to the preceptors, preceptor burn out, and increasing workloads of the preceptors etc.  This preceptor shortage is likely to increase.

In a recent exchange scholar trip to Netherlands, the presenter studied their advanced practice nurse clinical training model and observed the close relationship between the nurse practitioner in training and the future employer.  In Netherlands, every nurse practitioner in training have an employer that support their nurse practitioner study by providing the student employment, preceptor and training facility.  Upon graduation from the nurse practitioner program, the student will work for the sponsor at the area one was trained.

In this presentation, the pros and cons of such model will be analyzed.  The current US nurse practitioner training model will be briefly discussed.  The presentation will focus on finding ways to incorporate the Netherlands model to the US nurse practitioner education system.  Which will include enhanced collaboration between the school, the student and the potential employers.  The attendees will be invited to participate the discussion.
