Abstract:
With the introduction of The Essential Competencies in Genetics and Genomics for Graduate Nurses Draft Document, many advanced practice nursing programs are now in a position where they must beef up the genetics content that is being taught. However, there are numerous barriers to genetics integration. Many faculty members are uncomfortable teaching this content, because of their limited knowledge of genetics.  In addition, and inability to find additional class time to devote to genetics and genomics has contributed to poor program integration.

In an attempt to overcome barriers to genetics integration, an advanced practice nursing program utilized a novel approach to creating a genetics curricular thread. Blackboard was used as a vehicle to deliver genetics content in each core Family Nurse Practitioner course. Students received genetics content through video clips, articles, tutorials, and audio clips that directly related to content taught within the classroom.

By creating a blackboard genetics thread, genetics content can be instantly infused into an advanced practice nursing program, students are more likely to report the presence of a genetics thread, and demonstration of genetics integration becomes obvious for accreditation purposes.
