Abstract:
Clinical evaluations represent a significant component of determining clinical competency and progression towards programmatic and course goals in advanced nursing practice programs and is the responsibility of both the nurse practitioner faculty and preceptor (NTF 2014). A review of literature failed to produce any previous studies discussing the congruence between preceptor and faculty clinical evaluations of the same student. In addition, the authors were unable to find a standardized clinical evaluation instrument based on the National Organization for Nurse Practitioner Faculty (NONPF) nurse practitioner competencies and DNP Essentials for the evaluation of student performance in clinical practicums. It is important that faculty and preceptor evaluations are congruent in order to ensure that students receive the type of experiences essential for success in achieving course objectives and to demonstrate attainment of program competencies for preparation as advanced practice nurses in a highly complex and diverse healthcare system (Allen et al, 2008). While faculty are ultimately responsible for ensuring student clinical competencies, preceptors play an important role in providing direct observation and feedback of the student’s clinical performance. (NTF 2012, NONPF 2006, 2008.
The family nurse practitioner (FNP) evaluations were developed based on the domains described in the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties primary care competencies document (NONPF, 2002) and approved by the FNP faculty. Preceptors and faculty used the same evaluation form. A university's College of Nursing houses all FNP student evaluations in the Typhon record system. Typhon will be accessed to obtain midterm and final preceptor and faculty evaluations that were completed during FNP clinical management courses from January 2013 through August 2014. Preceptor and faculty evaluation scores in each domain of the evaluation will be extracted, de-identified and compared to determine the level of congruency between faculty and preceptor scores.
