Abstract:
Purpose: To appraise LGBT health knowledge, experience and readiness teaching LGBT health among faculty in baccalaureate nursing programs.

Background: The health disparities affecting the LGBT population is increasingly acknowledged. Currently there is a dearth of information on the state of integration of LGBT health in nursing programs.

Methods: A Likert-type survey questionnaire was sent to a non-probability sample of chief administrative leaders of nursing schools listed on the public websites of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing(AACN) (N=739). The administrative leaders were asked to forward the survey link to all faculty teaching in the baccalaureate program.

Results: Of 1,119 faculty participants, 43% reported knowledge limitationof LGBT health and 37% indicated limited awareness of LGBT health topics. Up to 63% indicated either never or seldom having taught LGBT health and 52% reported being fully or adequately ready to integrate LGBT health in their teaching. The median estimated time devoted to teaching LGBT health in BSN programs is 2.12 hours.

Conclusions: Findings will help inform the design of faculty development programs and guide in aligning the curricula with current LGBT health priorities.
