Abstract:
After nearly seven years since the introduction of our totally asynchronous, CCNE accredited, online DNP program, we have put together our recipe for success to share with participants. Innovations in technology that have improved distance education program formats draw students from around the world and drive changes in the delivery of nursing education to meet the needs of students in the on-line classroom. Advancing the methods and means, as well as the speed in which teaching/learning activities are presented to students on-line, allows students anywhere to easily access our courses. While overall efficient and effective and highly rated by students, our global distance education (DE) delivery is, at times, quite challenging for both faculty and students. DE requires changes in teaching pedagogy for faculty members and requires students to learn in a format that may require new knowledge gains for many in terms of technology acquisition before they can even engage in coursework.  It is a complex undertaking to succeed in making online coursework interactive and rigorous while keeping all methods and means asynchronous and simplistic.

This workshop will focus on the details of our recipe for success for going the distance in online program delivery. We will share the nuts and bolts pragmatic specifics about how DE can be provided to maximize faculty and environmental resources and how to use effective teaching/learning methods in a no-frills asynchronous format that is easily accessed by students. We have created a primer for unlocking the secrets regarding the most frequently asked questions (FAQ’s) that come to us via telephone, emails, and in-person query. Special topics highlighted for discussion during the workshop will include; 1) Delivery of common foundation core content across degree programs with an exemplar outlining how we actualize informatics and biostatistics content, 2) Advising online students from entry through capstone emphasizing advancing advising to the level of mentoring, 3) How the  popular, innovative, interdisciplinary Public Health Nurse Leader role concentration unfolds online , 4) Establishing practicum sites and recruitment and maintenance of qualified preceptors, and 5) A step-by-step, how-to guide for accomplishing the enormous task of completing states’ authorization requirements.
