Abstract:
Background: In 2015 AANC recommended that, in order to address the needs of our current and future health care system, all Nurse Practitioners be prepared at the doctoral level. A specialized clinical doctorate emerged and schools have developed a wide array of DNP programs with differing foci and outcomes. These now include post BSN and post MSN DNP programs

Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to identify the lessons learned as we developed, implemented and graduated our first DNP cohorts.

Through thoughtful reflection, faculty brain storming, student focus groups, and close monitoring of national DNP trends, our college developed a comprehensive DNP curriculum of both post BSN and post MSN DNP students that addresses essentials and competencies as well as the APRN consensus model.

Findings: Examples of program outcomes, (completed projects, presentations, publications) will be presented. Reports of graduates of our post MSN DNP program about how earning the DNP resulted in recognition from colleagues because of the additional competencies gained,  particularly related to quality improvement, improving evidence based practice and financial analysis of practice strengths will be detailed.

Implications: The academic preparation and future role of the DNP educated NP is critical to meeting the health care needs of our nation. Thoughtful design of DNP programs will enhance its acceptance from potential students, other professionals, and the community at large. This requires continuing cooperation and knowledge sharing among institutions of higher learning.
