Abstract:
The purpose of this course is to initiate and expose students to other traditional medical models and treatments that are becoming part of the mainstream in health care in the United States, described as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM).  Content will provide a basic understanding of these models.  From this foundation, using the structure of history taking and diagnosis, especially in terms of functionality, students will explore how they may be able to integrate prevention and treatment modalities into their practice and profession from these traditional and well-established models.  Class structure to serve this purpose will include case study, discussion and presentation.  The student will: explore and examine traditional medical modalities, explore traditional medical models in relationship to historical perspective, discuss personal ideas and opinions related to CAM, discuss healing interventions related to the nursing model, medical model, and practice, demonstrate how nurse practitioners may clinically integrate traditional healing approaches into primary care practice.
